Baseball:

What a difference two weeks can make.

On May 7th, San Dimas dropped a 4-2 decision to Colony to finish third in the Hacienda League at 6-6.

Sixteen days later, the Saints have earned a spot in this coming Tuesday’s CIF-SS Division 3 semifinal.

They began their postseason run with a 6-1 victory at Calabasas on May 15th.

Five days later, they paid Colony back with a 7-5 victory in Ontario.

And on Friday, SDHS James Rocha’s arm and Vaughn Coleman’s bat were center stage in a 5-0 victory over their visitors from Paraclete.

Rocha tossed a four-hit shutout.

He didn’t issue a walk and registered 10 strikeouts.

Rocha needed 98 pitches to finish what he started, and 67 of those 98 were strikes.

Carlo Ramirez doubled, while Noah Schneir, Julian Trejo and Armando Saucedo had one single apiece for the Spirits.

Cole Mercier got the loss after surrendering five runs on seven hits and one walk over 2 1/3 innings.

Leading 1-0 in the bottom of the second, Vaughn Coleman’s grand slam gave SDHS a 5-0 lead, and he provided Rocha with far more support than he would need.

Jason Almeda drew a pair of walks and scored.

Michael Melodia walked, scored and had an RBI fielder’s choice.

Aaden Escarcega and Josh Calcanas singled and scored.

Jayden Claros, AJ Larios, Ashton Romero and Jayden Medina had one single apiece for the Saints.

Up next: The Saints travel to Beckman in Tuesday’s semifinal round.

The Patriots (18-13) edged their hosts from Arrowhead Christian, 5-4, on Friday.

Quotable:

SDHS senior, Vaughn Coleman: “The bases were loaded early in the game, I knew I was going to get a pitch to hit, and I didn’t miss it. Rocha is the type of pitcher who loves to be in the big moments. He loves to be the guy to get it done for our team. So he did what he usually does, which is just to go out there and compete to his best ability. We have just been able to play together and put together three complete games. Good pitching and good defense. And being able to rally some runs. Hopefully we can keep playing like this for the next two games.”

SDHS sophomore, James Rocha: “I was a little nervous in the beginning, but Vaughn’s grand slam gave us all some breathing room. However, I didn’t want to give them (Paraclete) anything. I continued to pound the zone, through strikes and trust my defense to make plays behind me. My slider and fastball were working well. My change up wasn’t really on today. Vaughn is a great leader. When I got called up to varsity last year, he tried to help me in any way that he could. He is always trying to help others, on and off the baseball field. I think the reason we’re having a solid postseason is because our chemistry has continued to get better as the season has gone along.”
