College Baseball:

The University of La Verne saw its historic 2025 run come to an end on Saturday.

And of all teams to knock them out, it was their SCIAC counterpart from Pomona-Pitzer that claimed a 2-1 season-ending win over the Leopards in 10 innings.

ULV went 5-2 this season against the Sagehens, and that included a 9-7 victory in the SCIAC Tournament title game.

La Verne won its third consecutive SCIAC regular season title.

This year’s seniors were the first class to have won 30 or more games in four consecutive years in program history.

They also secured 127 wins between 2022-2025, which is a school record as well.

ULV’s 35 wins is the program’s best since 1995, and second most in program history according to Baseball Reference.

The Leopards had a 16-game win streak between February 21st-March 22nd.

ULV got elite performances on the mound from Ethan Galindo and Matt DesMarets.

Galindo finished 9-1 with a 2.89 ERA.

The ULV senior lefty walked 12 and struck out 49 batters in 81 innings.

Matt DesMarets: 9-2, 2.90 ERA, 34 walks & 98 strikeouts in 80 2/3 IP.

Galindo won his final start in a 5-1 victory over Whitworth in the first game of the NCAA Regional.

DesMarets went seven innings in ULV’s 5-4 loss to McMurry in the second round.

He allowed just one earned run, walked one and struck out 11 batters.

Justin Ries went 2-2 out of the bullpen with four saves and a 3.02 ERA.

Ries issued 13 walks, and he fanned 48 in 41 2/3 IP.

Ryan Vosika had a tremendous junior campaign.

Vosika led ULV in batting average (.417), hits (70) and runs (58).

He was second in triples (3), third in doubles (9) and fourth in RBIs (29).

Nathan Perry had a great 2025 regular and postseason, hitting at a .402 clip with 49 hits, 29 runs, 33 RBIs, nine doubles, one triple and an HR.

Jason Givens batted .380 with 46 hits 37 runs, 35 RBIs, eight doubles, one triple and three home runs.

Noah Garcia had a .333 batting average with two triples, a pair of home runs, and he was second in hits (57) and runs (41).

Garcia led the Leopards with 14 doubles.

Logan Corthell batted .339 with 38 hits, 29 run, 29 RBIs, and he was first in triples (4) and home runs (4).

Matt Rice came over from PCC, and be batted .349 with 29 hits, 25 runs, 29 RBIs, one triple and one HR.

Rice was second on the team with 11 doubles.

I asked longtime ULV coach Scott Winterburn to talk about winning a third consecutive SCIAC regular season championship, a SCIAC tournament title, his 2025 senior class being the first in program history to win 30 or more games in all four years, batting and pitching leaders, and the 35 wins being the most in literally 30 years.

Said Scott Winterburn: “This season was four years in the making, as many of the 16 seniors have been around for the past four seasons, and several juniors having been here for three of them. It has been very special, not many coaches have teams that win conference titles three seasons in a row, especially in this conference which is maybe the best in the nation. It’s very gratifying to win the SCIAC Tournament, a very tough thing to do. Of course, we were all disappointed the season ended in the regional, but I am very proud of this group. These seniors have won more games than any group I’ve had, and maybe even in the history of the baseball program.

Our pitching leaders: Ethan Galindo and Matthew DesMarets had great seasons- a couple of the best you’ll see. And it’s crazy how similar many of their numbers were. They competed all year and both were playoff standouts. Justin Ries had a great breakout season as a reliever, and we are looking forward to the future with him.

Our batting leaders: Ryan Vosika had a big year. He hit .417, had 70 hits and was on base 115 times this year. He also played a really solid shortstop all year long. Junior catcher Nate Perry had another good year at the plate, earning all-conference honors for the third year in a row, and he has another year here. Jason Givens and Benny Vogel hit .380 and .377, respectively, and Noah Garcia drove in 43 runs for us with 18 extra-base hits. Logan Reese had a solid year at the plate and an excellent year in right field.

This class of 2025 became the first group to win 30 or more games in four consecutive years. If you throw out the COVID seasons where we only played a handful of games, we’ve actually had 5 seasons of 30 wins in a row in the last five full seasons, and the one before that, we had 29. So, we’re having an excellent run of winning seasons and not coincidentally have had an excellent run of mature players. I’m so very proud of them. There are some very hirable young men coming out of this program. I really wish we could have kept going for this group of seniors, they earned their way through the whole time. However, I know the best things in their lives are ahead of them.”

Congrats to Coach Winterburn, his staff and their players on an historic 2025 season.
