College Baseball:
Mt. SAC is the first JC program in California to earn a spot in next week’s Final Four to decide a state champion.
The Mounties earned the privilege to play for a state title in their own stadium thanks to 14-2 and 9-8 victories over Glendale on Friday, and Saturday, respectively.
MSAC thumped the Vaqueros in game one of a best-of-three series by out-hitting GCC, 19-6.
But on Saturday, Mt. SAC had to overcome deficits of 6-0 and 8-3 to eliminate Glendale in 10 innings.
The Mounties scored three runs in the seventh inning, and they got one run apiece in the eighth, ninth and 10th innings.
Matt Cuccias went the first seven for GCC and he was responsible for six runs on seven hits.
Cuccias issued three walks and registered nine strikeouts.
It took Cuccias 128 pitches to get through the seventh, but he left with a two-run lead.
The Mounties got to Cris Banuelos for two runs on five hits over two innings.
Cuccias and Banuelos hit one batter apiece.
Luis Fernandez got the loss after allowing one run on one hit and a walk.
Noah Rodriguez had an RBI ground out in the top of the fifth for the designated visitors.
But it was his RBI triple in the 10th that turned out to be the game winning hit.
Landon White went 3-for-4 with three runs, and his two-run HR in the seventh pulled the Mounties to within 8-6 of GCC.
Bryan Bradshaw had an RBI single, an RBI double and he scored his state-leading 89th run on Saturday.
Cole Nachreiner and Diego Ortiz had clutch RBI singles in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively.
Ty Thomas went 3-for-5.
Tyler Stull walked, singled and scored.
Jackson Giacone drew a pair of walks and scored twice.
Terrell Jackso walked, doubled and scored a pair of runs.
Hudson Castillo got the start, and he got roughed up for eight runs on 10 hits over 5 2/3 innings.
Castillo walked one, hit one batter and fanned three GCC batter.
But the Mounties’ pen came up huge.
Joey Peralta went 2 1/3 scoreless and hitless innings in relief, including three strikeouts.
Matt Viveros was credited with the win, going one scoreless, allowing one hit, walking one and striking out one.
Sam Silversmith earned his seventh save with a scoreless 10th inning, including a pair of strikeouts.
Daniel Ruiz scored, had a two-run single in the six-run third inning, and he singled in another run in the sixth.
Max Price went 2-for-4, and his two-run double gave GCC a 6-0 lead.
Ethan Munoz singled three times and scored a pair of runs.
Ethan Kearney singled and scored twice.
Alex Dolan walked, scored and had an RBI double.
Jordan Viramontes doubled in a run and scored.
David Lozano walked, scored and had an RBI single.
Ethen Pena singled.
Up next: Mt. SAC is expected to get its next opponent on Monday for next weekend’s Final Four.
