Quotable:
Etiwanda coach, Don Furnald: “Congratulations to Travis and his staff. They’ve worked extremely hard the past three years, and they earned this year’s Baseline League title!”
LOHS coach, Travis Kelly: “Jordan Mejico threw a gem today. He was outstanding to the end. Our big three, Wyatt Mohler, Hunter Meyer, Justin Yeutter all came through like they did all year. What we accomplished today was our goal when we took over back in February of 2013. We knew we had to change the culture and hold each other accountable. Every member of the roster did something invaluable for this to happen, but I also wanted to credit my coaching staff. I brought in a coaching staff that all had crazy playing backgrounds. Robert Fish (pitching coach), Wes Stone (hitting), LA County Sheriff homicide detective John Duncan is our strength coach and Alex Avalos served as our infielder’s coach until he took over at Webb. I am so thankful to each of my coaches, my players and their parents for being as supportive as they’ve been. I also wanted to credit Don Furnald at Etiwanda. He’s built an empire over there and he has what we all want. So, to have to beat them was difficult, but rewarding because of the program he leads.”
LOHS senior, Hunter Meyer: “Winning that first game today was huge for us. Winning a championship for the school means a lot to our players and coaches. Jordan is an amazing pitcher, and he did a great job today. When he’s on the mound, you know he’s going to get people out. He trusts us to make plays behind him. It means a lot to me and my family knowing I did my part in this. We also know there’s not much that we can do without our coaching staff. Coach Kelly is up all night trying to get us recruited to colleges and we feel prepared for every game we play. Our coaches push us to our limits to be the best players, students and people we can be. I’m really proud of the entire team, because every player accepted their roles and we all pulled for one another. I am most proud of the relationships built and the fun we have being together.”
