Baseball:
This 2025 version isn’t Bonita’s most talented or deepest team in recent memory.
However, Ryan Marcos, his staff, and their players always seem to rise to the occasion.
And Tuesday was no exception.
Glendora took a one-run lead into the bottom of the seventh inning, and they enjoyed a three-run advantage as Bonita picked up their bats in the eighth.
The Bearcats got one in the seventh to force extra innings, and they answered the Tartans three runs with four of their own to secure a 7-6 victory.
With five regular season games to play, BHS trails the high-flying Ayala Bulldogs by one game.
Brayden Johnson went seven innings and only half of the four runs charged to him were earned.
Johnson allowed six hits, didn’t issue a walk and registered seven strikeouts.
Sergio Garza was charged with the loss after surrendering three runs on four hits and a walk over 2/3 of an inning.
Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Judah Reeve squeezed Drew Apodaca home with one out to send the game into extra innings.
With Glendora leading 6-3 in the eighth, Dominic Garcia, Cody White and Austin Banuelos collected three consecutive base hits to load the bases.
Santiago Garza was able to get Josh Angely to pop up for an infield-fly rule (out).
Andrew Sanchez drew a bases loaded walk.
And Joaquin Covarrubias grounded back to Garza, and he got the force play at the plate.
So, GHS led 6-4 with two outs.
Jarrett Kozma singled in a pair of runs to tie the game at 6-6.
And Judah Reeve’s RBI and walk-off single plated Covarrubias with the winning run.
Andrew Sanchez went 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs and three RBIs.
Covarrubias singled and scored.
Reeve finished 2-for-3 with two huge RBIs.
Garcia singled and scored.
Cody White was 2-for-4, and Austin Banuelos had two singles and scored a pair of runs.
Camden Farina went the first four innings, and he was charged with two runs on three hits.
Farina walked four and struck out one.
Ryder Gibson provided three innings in relief, and he surrendered two runs on four hits.
Gibson issued one walk and registered five strikeouts.
Daniel Nageer was credited with the win, after going the eighth and allowing a pair of unearned runs on one hit and a walk.
Nageer got two of his three outs via strikeout.
As for the Glendora offense: with the game tied at 2-2 in the top of the seventh, Aaron Jacobsen doubled, and two batters later, Jackson Glaze had an RBI double to give GHS a 3-2 lead.
In the eighth, Aidan Yamazaki was hit by pitch and John Seader had a bunt single.
Nageer would strike out a batter and got another to ground out without any damage.
With two outs, though, Yamazaki scored on a wild pitch.
And Tyler Olbert singled in Jacobsen and Seader to take the 6-3 lead.
Nageer got out of the inning with a strikeout, but the damage had been done.
At least, it seemed.
Seader went 3-for-4 with three runs scored.
Jacobsen went 2-for-3 with two walks and a run scored.
Jacobsen would have scored twice, but Troy Norman pinch ran for AJ in the top of the seventh.
Olbert went 2-for-4 with a walk and the two RBIs.
Brayden Johnson walked and scored.
Yamazaki singled and scored.
Garza singled once from the leadoff spot.

Quotable:
Bonita coach, Ryan Marcos: “We’ve been saying it all year during practices and in games: ‘Nobody said it’s going to be easy,’ has been our mantra. Basically, we don’t deserve anything. We have to earn everything. Glendora had us against the ropes multiple times tonight, but we refused to lose and what we did tonight showed a lot of heart. Brayden Johnson pitched a heck of a game, and their bullpen was tough too, but we found a way to get the walk-off. Back to the drawing board for Thursday’s matchup at their place.”
