Boys Athletes of the Week:

What a way to open the CIF-SS playoffs for a couple of local pitchers.

Maranatha (22-6) secured a 4-0 victory over visiting Royal on Thursday at Brookside Park.

Zach Strickland threw a no-hitter and had an RBI triple to get the Minutemen on the board.

Strickland improved to 9-0, issued a pair of walks and struck out 17.

He got nine Highlanders on strikes at least once, and Strickland fanned five Royals’ batters two or more times on Thursday.

Monrovia (17-10) cruised to a 6-1 victory at Pasadena Poly in the Division 5 opener for both programs.

Zach Menlove went the distance, and he allowed one run on two hits.

Menlove didn’t walk anyone and struck out 19 Panthers’ batters.

The Wildcats senior struck out all 10 batters he faced at least once, and eight separate Poly hitters went down on strikes two times or more.

It’s the second consecutive year that Poly was embarrassed in the first round of the playoffs.

In 2023, as the No. 1 seed in Division 4, the Panthers were torched by Crean Lutheran, 24-3.

Up next: Maranatha travels to Ayala on Tuesday at 3:15.

The Bulldogs (13-11-1) have won seven consecutive games, including Thursday’s 6-1 victory at La Serna in the first round of the Division 2 playoffs.

Maranatha has won eight in a row.

Monrovia will host Calvary Chapel Santa Ana on Tuesday.

The Eagles (14-12) defeated Saugus, 6-2, in their first-round game on Friday.
