Boys Tennis:

When Maranatha and Duarte met last season, much of the Falcons’ team were underclassmen, while most of the Minutemen were upperclassmen.

MHS won 14-4.

A year later, most of the Falcons are now upperclassmen and have improved and matured.

Their coaches said, “this year, the guys really want it.”

It showed in their exemplary hustle, work ethic, and smart play.

That determination has led them to possibly their most successful season at 11-2 and a No. 2 ranking in CIF-SS Division 6.

It also was a great visual for the underclassmen-dominated Minutemen, as they saw what their future could be in a year or two with the right work ethic and mindset.

Today’s nonleague match was really a duel between the Falcons’ singles and the Minutemen’s doubles.

Who would win more and by how much?

Duarte dominated singles, with No. 1 Cherif Sauma winning Maranatha’s only singles set, 6-1.

On the other hand, Maranatha had won 7 of 8 sets in doubles and was seeking to even the match at 9-9, with the day’s final set being played and MHS down, 8-9.

No. 3 Hayden Geeting/Nate Schumann fell short, 6-3, giving the Falcons the hard-fought 10-8 overall win over the Minutemen.

This was Geeting’s first time back on a tennis court in nearly two weeks after being away.

So, today was a day to begin regaining his form and get his conditioning back.

Though he and Schumann lost Maranatha’s only two doubles points, it was a big positive to have Geeting back, even if rusty, as he was missed in last week’s losses.

No. 1 Matt Yip/Reggie Park won the day’s most exciting set, coming back from a 3-5 deficit to force a tie-breaker, which they won 7-6 (3).

They rolled after that, 6-1, 6-1.

No. 2 Malachi Dharmaratne/Yohan Park also swept, 7-5, 6-3, 6-1, playing good solid tennis.

Up next: The Minutemen host the New Road Jaguars on Wednesday in a league match with playoff implications.

Each team still has a chance to keep their playoff hopes alive with a win.
