JC Baseball End of Season Scenarios: Chaffey Will Earn Second Consecutive IEAC Crown, Citrus, Mt. SAC & PCC Hoping to Better Playoff Position

Apr 16 2024 04:59:43

College Baseball:

Inland Empire Athletic Conference:

Chaffey enters the final two weeks of the 2024 season with a three-game lead over second-place Desert.

The Panthers can wrap up a second consecutive IEAC title with a Tuesday win over their visitors from Desert.

It would be the first time the Panthers had accomplished that feat in 16 years.

Along with four remaining conference games, Chaffey will have nonconference showdowns with PCC at Mt. SAC to close out their regular season.

The Panthers have won 11 consecutive IEAC games, and their last loss dates all the way back to a March 9th (5-3) setback at Desert.

IEAC Standings:
Chaffey (24-11, 18-2)
Desert (19-15, 15-5)
Mt. San Jacinto (24-10, 13-6)
SBVC (14-20, 9-11)
Cerro Coso (15-19, 8-10)
Victor Valley (6-26, 3-17)
Barstow (3-32, 1-18)

Chaffey’s Remaining Schedule:
4/16: Desert at Chaffey
4/20: Chaffey at Cerro Coso
4/22: PCC at Chaffey
4/23: Barstow at Chaffey
4/25: Chaffey at Mt. SAC

South Coast Conference:

Mt. SAC has all but wrapped up the No. 3 spot in the South Coast Conference.

Because of that, the Mounties will compete in the 2024 postseason.

They hold a three-game advantage in the loss column over fourth-place PCC and El Camino, who are both 11-10 in SCC games.

There’s also an outside chance that MSAC could finish as high as second place.

LBCC has a two-game lead over the Mounties, but they’ve lost four of their last six conference games.

With six to play, the Vikings will face Compton this week, and first-place Cerritos next week.

Mt. SAC has won nine of their last 10 games, and over that stretch, they outscored their opponents by a combined margin of 139-56.

The Mounties battle last-place LA Harbor this week and finish up with fourth-place, El Camino.

PCC, as mentioned, is tied for fourth with El Camino.

Unlike Mt. SAC, PCC and El Camino have just three conference games remaining on their 2024 slate.

To ensure a postseason berth, the Lancers would need to finish fourth, but they can also make the playoffs as long as they finish ahead of ELAC.

PCC opens its three-game SCC series tomorrow with first-place Cerritos at Brookside Park.

According to Pasadena City College Sports Information Director Robert Lewis, the Lancers need to finish in the top 24 in the RPI, which they currently stand at No. 23.

If they do that, PCC will have earned a playoff spot for the sixth time in Pat McGee’s eight complete seasons leading that program.

It’s McGee’s ninth year, but they only played 20 games in 2020 before the Coronavirus wiped out the rest of the season, and the Lancers didn’t play at all in 2021.

After taking over a fledgling program and not making the postseason in the first two seasons, PCC has been a mainstay in the playoffs ever since.

SCC Standings:
Cerritos (29-5, 16-2)
Long Beach (24-10, 13-5)
Mt. SAC (22-12, 11-7)

Western State Conference (South):

Citrus has the chance to secure its first winning season since 2017.

With six games to play, the Owls find themselves in fourth place in the Western State Conference South Division, and they trail third-place Canyons by just one game.

Citrus will face second-place Glendale three times this week, and then finish the regular season against fifth-place Bakersfield.

The Owls were mired in a seven-game losing streak, but they’ve turned the page and have won four consecutive games.

Western State Conference South Division Standings:
LA Valley (28-6, 14-1)
