Who could have believed a program that entered the CIF-SS playoffs at 2-8 would find itself in the Division 8 semifinals?

Apparently, the Charter Oak football team.

That’s who.

The Chargers secured a convincing 23-7 victory over their visitors from Covina High School.

The COHS defense held the Colts offense to 35 points under its weekly scoring average.

And they pressured Covina’s record-setting quarterback, Jake Duronslet, all night.

Duronslet, who recently set a new school record for career TD’s (now with 74) in this, his junior year, went 11-of-18 for 110 yards, with no TD’s, and the member of the exclusive 5,000-yard club was picked once.

Charter Oak took a 7-0 lead when Sean Munoz caught a 60-yard TD pass from Corin Berry.

Covina answered back, as Joseph Rangel rumbled into the south end zone from five yards out.

That would be all the Colts offense could muster, as COHS went on to score the game’s final 16 points.

One guy that is overlooked, as many kickers are, is Chargers’ junior, Mitchell Gibbens.

Gibbens has hit long-range field goals all season, and he has the confidence of his coaches and teammates.

On Friday night, Gibbens booted field goals of 35, 28 and 27 yards and was 2-of-2 on his extra-point attempts.

A crucial blow to a potential Covina comeback occurred in the third quarter when a COHS running back fumbled the ball in the end zone.

It looked as though a Colts defender was going to jump on the ball for a touchback, and Covina getting the ball at the 20-yard line going north.

But he missed, and Steven Lopez pounced on the ball for a Chargers’ TD.

Gibbens’ final field goal of 27 yards was the only points in the fourth quarter for either program.

Charter Oak had a 313-223 advantage in total offense.

Berry completed 10-of-22 for 154 yards.

He had the one TD and was picked twice.

Curtiss Taylor led Charter Oak with 48 yards rushing on six carries, and he picked Duronslet on defense.

Munoz led COHS with five catches for 105 yards, and Legend Lyons had five receptions for 46 yards.

Joseph Rangel led all rushers with 65 yards on 11 carries, and that included this memorable run over a Chargers’ defender.

Abraham Perez had four receptions for 42 yards, and Adrian Rachal caught four passes for 33 yards.

Jayson Porter and Adrian Rachal both picked Berry on Friday.

Up next: The Chargers face Highland next Friday.

The Bulldogs (8-4) knocked off top-seeded Brentwood, 34-27, in Palmdale.
