Football:

There was something in the air on Thursday night.

In the final week of the regular season, four favorites (Rancho Cucamonga, Damien, Northview & San Marino) were defeated, and three of the four (RCHS, DHS & NHS) were projected to win by double figures.

But that’s why they play the game.

And it’s difficult to factor in the familiarity of league games, where both programs have a really good idea of what to expect from their opponent.

Northview entered Thursday’s Valle Vista League showdown with visiting Diamond Ranch 7-1 overall and 2-0 in VVL games.

The Vikings were riding a seven-game win streak and the Panthers had just fallen to San Dimas last week.

Diamond Ranch, however, would score the game’s first 26 points, and they held on for a 36-28 victory at Covina District Field.

If San Dimas is able to pick up a victory at Los Altos tonight, SDHS, Northview and Diamond Ranch would share the league championship.

The stat of the game had to be the Panthers holding the Vikings to 27 net yards rushing.

That is 213 less than Northview’s weekly rushing average of 240.

Keanu Vasquez completed 13-of-26 for 217 yards, including three scores and one pick.

Vasquez hooked up with D’mariya Thomas on TD’s of 19, 28 and 39 yards.

Thomas finished with six receptions for 136 yards.

Jaelen Gallegos anchored the Panthers ground game with 116 yards on 21 carries.

Gallegos had a nine-yard TD run to extend the Diamond Ranch lead to 25-0 in the second quarter.

Erik Jimenez completed 15-of-29 for 292 yards.

The Northview junior tossed four TD passes and one pick.

Dylan Ochoa caught TD passes of 50 and 45 yards from Jimenez.

Jimenez also had TD strikes of 37 yards (Donovan Perez), and an 8-yarder to Jaishon Bledsoe.

Dwayne Thompson led the Vikings receiving corps with seven catches and 116 yards.

Perez had four catches for 61 yards, and Ochoa caught two passes for 95 yards.

Angel Barraza carried the ball seven times for 48 yards, and Keanu Tauvao gained 36 yards on nine carries.

Jimenez was held to minus-67 yards on 11 carries.

NHS fumbled five times, but luckily, they only lost possession once.
