College Football:

Mt. SAC remained unbeaten in 2023 with thanks to a dominant effort on both sides of the ball.

The Mounties secured a 29-7 victory over visiting Cerritos College, and they improved to 6-0.

The Mt. SAC defense held the Falcons to just 169 yards of total offense, and they kept Cerritos off the scoreboard for the final 49:07 on Saturday.

Late in the first quarter, Andre Lampley hit Isaiah Blair on a 6-yard TD pass to catch the Mounties at 7-7.

But that was all the Falcons offense could muster.

Alex Flores had an efficient night at quarterback.

Flores finished 24-of-39 for 193 yards.

He was picked once, but threw TD passes of 12, 7 and 15 yards.

Flores found Jordan Williams on a 12-yard TD just 46 seconds into the contest.

Flores and De’shon Thompson hooked up on a 7-yard score, and he finished his night with a 15-yard TD pass to Dedrek Taylor-Akins.

The ground game comparison isnn’t even funny.

The Mounties rushed for 166 net yards to minus-nine for Cerritos.

Nick Floyd carried the ball 12 times for 77 yards, and Samuel Green gained 73 yards on 13 carries.

Taylor-Akins caught five passes for 74 yards and one score.

Williams had three receptions for 45 yards and one TD.

Diego Esqueda, the state’s most reliable kicker, went 3-for-3 on extra-point attempts and hit field goals of 32 and 27 yards.

Seventeen Mounties had at least one tackle, including Juan Salas and Robert Turner, who finished with four tackles apiece.

Harold Peters picked off a pass for the MSAC defense.

Quotable:

Mt. SAC quarterback, Alex Flores: “Offensively, we started off strong scoring in two plays on our first drive. Over the bye week, our coaches put together a great game plan and we were getting everything we expected from Cerritos. We definitely executed on drives and there were some drives where we felt we left some points on the board that we need to clean up moving forward. I’m extremely appreciative of our defense. They played a great game tonight and I loved seeing them fly around and make plays over and over again. We competed extremely hard against each other at practice and finding ways to make each other better, and I’m thankful that I’m not the one going up against them on Saturday nights.”
