Girls Tennis:
This was the biggest week of the season to date for the Lady Minutemen.
They entered the week in sole possession of the Olympic League lead, but with their two biggest contenders to play this week, each of whom they narrowly edged out, 10-8, the first time they played.
Monday’s 9-9 (75-73) heartbreaking loss to Valley Christian evened their series, as well as their league records.
A loss on Wednesday would drop the Lady Minutemen into second place.
Just like Monday’s fiercely competitive match, this had the makings of an intense contest, as Village was trying to claw their way back into the league conversation, after already losing to both Valley and Maranatha (both close affairs).
Unfortunately, the Crusaders were missing their second best player, significantly weakening them, and forcing them to shuffle their lineup.
The Crusaders still had the league’s top singles player, Karen Shin, who remained undefeated in league after sweeping Maranatha’s singles today.
Her teammate is the second member of this dynamo tandem that often automatically gives Village six points.
The first round ended with three doubles wins by Maranatha – #1 Mia Huang/Mia Su, #2 Diana Sarksyan/Laura Garabedian, and #3 Esmee Eaton/Sofia Celis by the scores of 6-2, 6-3, 6-3 – as well as one singles win by #2 Grace Yang.
That lead doubled to 8-4 after two rounds, with the doubles teams registering another sweep, 6-1, 6-3, 7-5, and #1 Natalie Arminak checking in with a 6-1 win.
The third round saw Arminak and Yang close out their days with 6-2 victories, while Huang/Su and Sarksyan/Garabedian defeated their opponents, 6-1, 6-2.
The most exciting match of the day came in the final set between Marantha’s alternates, Madison White and Doria Chen, and Village’s #1 team for this round (a regular #1 and an alternate).
With all other sets completed, all eyes were on this contest, which went to a 6-6 before White/Chen fell short, 7-4, in the tie-breaker.
Today’s win effectively makes the league title chase a two-team race, with both Valley Christian and Maranatha set to face off for the rubber match next Thursday at Valley Christian.
But before that, Maranatha (8-3 overall; 4-1 in league) will travel to Whittier Christian on Tuesday to play the Heralds, in a rare 1 p.m. start.
Baseball: Rio Hondo Prep won five of its last six regular season games to earn a spot in the CIF-SS playoffs. The Kares hosted Bolsa Grande in Tuesday’s Division 8 wild card game.
