Girls Tennis:

Thanks to Maranatha for this report

The Providence Pioneers came to town for both teams’ final nonleague match of the year.

They met for the first time last year, with Maranatha prevailing, 13-5.

Today’s match started with a last minute substitution for MHS, as starter/captain Esmee Eaton was unable to play, marking the 5th time this season the Lady Minutemen were unable to start their full lineup.

One benefactor of that has been alternate Madison White, who was originally told that she would not be playing in matches this year.

She has since started 5 matches, including today’s, making the most of her unexpected playing time.

Maranatha came out of the gates quickly, building a 5-1 lead after the first round, with the only loss coming at the hands of the Pioneers’ singles ace, Sophia Kevorkian, who swept MHS’s singles today.

Providence rebounded by winning 3 of the first 5 sets of the 2nd round.

With their No. 1 doubles leading No. 2 Diana Sarksyan/Laura Garabedian 5-2, it seemed very likely that MHS’s lead would be cut down to 7-5.

However, Sarksyan/Garabedian made a tactical adjustment and evened the score at 6-6 to force a tie-breaker.

It was immediately apparent that this was their first-ever tie-breaker, as they quickly fell behind, 2-6, before winning the next 6 points to claim the tie-breaker, 8-6, and put the Lady Minutemen more comfortably ahead, 8-4.

That comeback fueled a dominant effort in the 3rd round by the Lady Minutemen, who won 4 sets by the score of 6-0.

Singles: 5-4
1 Natalie Arminak – 1-6, 6-0, 6-1
2 Grace Yang – 1-6, 6-1, 6-0
3 Kathryn Khalil – 0-6, 4-6, 6-4

Doubles: 7-2
1 Mia Huang/Mia Su 6-0, 6-1, 6-0
2 Diana Sarksyan/Laura Garabedian 7-6(6), 6-1, 6-0
3 Sofia Celis/Madison White 1-6, 5-7, 6-3

Today’s win puts Maranatha’s overall record at 8-2.

The Lady Minutemen restart league play on Monday, traveling to Valley Christian/Cerritos.

Maranatha narrowly defeated the Defenders, 10-8, on Tuesday to take sole possession of 1st place in Olympic League play.

Both teams entered that match undefeated and tied for the league lead.

The Defenders will be seeking to get even with Maranatha and reclaim a share of the league lead.
