The 2023 football season has been an up-and-down experience for Monrovia.

The Wildcats had a team (Palm Springs) cancel on them at the last minute, they’ve fought through injuries, had an early-season bye and they’re adapting to a new coaching staff.

In between a pair of lopsided losses to Bonita and Northview, the boys in green had a 30-point victory over El Rancho in week two.

That gets us to Thursday night.

In this writer’s view, Monrovia quarterback Brian Salazar has been one of the SGV’s unsung heroes.

And it was Salazar’s dominance behind center that led the Wildcats to a 42-29 nonleague victory at San Dimas.

Salazar completed 19-of-28 for 471 yards.

The slender senior threw for three TD’s and didn’t turn the ball over.

Noah Ellison, who plays a starring role for Brad Blackmore’s baseball program had another big night.

Ellison caught six passes for 206 yards and that included a 70-yard TD.

Joshua Griffiths had a huge night on both sides of the ball.

He had five receptions for 135 yards and two scores, rushed for a pair of TD’s and had 11 tackles.

The Wildcats rushed for just 122 yards, but scored half of their TD’s on the ground.

Davonte Jones carries the ball 11 times for 95 yards and one TD.

Defensively, Troy Grise, Alex Ramirez and David Alvarez had 13 tackles apiece for the Wildcats.

Iziaih Ainsworth totaled 10 tackles in Thursday’s win.

Grise, Alvarez and Ramirez all recovered one fumble apiece.

For the season (four games), Salazar has thrown 14 TD’s and been picked four times.

He averages 360 yards through the air and has a 60-percent completion ratio.

Up next: The Wildcats open Rio Hondo League play next Friday at Temple City, and the Saints visit Don Lugo.

The kickoff is slated for 7.

Records: Monrovia (2-2); San Dimas (3-3)
