The John Sanders-Preston Jernegan show took center stage for the second consecutive week.
The St. Francis quarterback and tight end, respectively, had another big night in St. Francis’ 34-21 victory over visiting Mira Costa.
One week after hooking up for four TD’s in a 45-point drubbing of West Ranch, Sanders found Jernegan for three scores in a game that St. Francis never trailed.
The Mustangs tied the game at 7-7 on a seven-yard TD pass midway through the first quarter, but SFHS would answer in less than two minutes, as Sanders hit Jernegan on a 23-yard scoring strike.
For the game, Sanders completed 14-of-24 for 275 yards.
For the second straight week, Sanders was effective with his feet, gaining 53 yards on eight carries.
Jernegan tallied TD catches of 11, 23 and 53 yards, and finished with 125 receiving yards.
And none of Jernegan’s three scores was bigger than an 11-yard TD with 7:29 to play.
Mira Costa had rallied to pull to within 27-21.
But the SFHS tandem of Sanders-to-Jernegan all but put the game on ice.
It wasn’t just a big night for John Sanders.
His freshman brother, Shawn Sanders, had second quarter field goals of 21 and 39 yards, which allowed St. Francis to take a 27-7 lead into the break.
