Arroyo Seco Sentinels Open 2023 Summer Collegiate Ball as One of Favorites to Win Newly Formed Pro-Am League

Baseball:

Just a few days ago, the CIF State baseball playoffs concluded, and that signaled an official end to the 2022-23 high school sports season.

And that means that summer baseball is upon us for graduating high school seniors as well as current college athletes.

One of the SGV area’s premier programs, the Arroyo Seco Sentinels, are back in action.

The Sentinels, who play their home games out of Brookside Park in Pasadena, have begun the 39-game regular-season schedule with a 2-1 mark.

In 2022, Arroyo Seco finished third in the Best of the West League behind the Ventura County Pirates and the Inland Valley Pirates, respectively.

But after the longtime and respected owner sold the Best of the West and Sunset collegiate baseball summer leagues earlier this year to an owner/coach from another program, the Best of the West League folded like a cheap suit.

Of the seven BOTW programs, only two remained.

The champs (Ventura County Pirates) are now an independent program.

Arroyo Seco joined the Pro-Am League, which includes the Ventura County Bucs, Long Beach Legends, Orange County Legends, LA Legends, South Bay Sliders, and a couple of teams from the Rancho Cucamonga area (Red Birds & Biscuits).

The Sentinels are run by Nico Calderaro, who also owned the 2022 Sunset League champion Arroyo Seco Royals.

But after leaving both the Sunset and BOTW leagues, Calderaro brought a number of his former Royals’ players to bolster his 40-plus man roster in the Pro-Am League.

And that list includes some stars from high school and college ball.

St. Paul’s Devin Munoz, who will play both football and baseball at Oklahoma is among a roster that would be considered a favorite to contend for a Pro-Am title.

Four of PCC’s leading five pitchers, Coleman Mitchell, Rider Gardner, Kyle Noell and Ben Griffith will all see action over the next eight weeks.

The Sentinels will also have the bat of the Lancers’ outfielder Tommy Castillo.

La Salle’s Will Clougherty, who was among the SGV leaders in average and hits, is also a guy Calderaro is excited to have.

Clougherty will attend and compete for Eastern Tennessee.

Maranatha’s Bryan Richman might be the smallest guy on the field, but Calderaro said Richman’s skills and potential are off the charts.

Ganesha’s Noah Alvarez (Cal State Bakersfield) and Adrian Lopez (Long Beach State), fresh off winning a CIF-SS D-7 championship, are both members of the Arroyo Seco roster.

Long Beach State catcher Andrew Pile, who played at La Mirada, is another player expected to make a sizeable contribution.

Calderaro’s assistants include Christian Longoria, who played at Mt. SAC & Cal State LA.

Longoria is currently an assistant at San Dimas High School.

And Ganesha assistant, Juan Cervantes, is also a member of the Sentinels coaching staff.

The regular season started June 2nd and runs through July 19th.

The top five teams move on to the playoffs, which begins on July 26th.

Up next: The Sentinels travel to LBCC tomorrow (Tuesday) to take on the Long Beach Legends at at 4:30.
