Softball:
Artesia trailed Mayfield, 2-1, in the top of the fifth inning in Thursday’s CIF-SS Division 6 quarterfinal.
The visiting Pioneers, however, got four runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to pull away in a 7-3 road victory.
Artesia out-hit Mayfield, 11-6, and the Pioneers will host JW North in Saturday’s semifinal showdown.
Maya Torres went the distance to earn the win.
Torres surrendered three runs (one earned) on six hits.
She walked two and struck out four.
Jaz Johnson went 3-for-4 and scored all three Mayfield runs.
Madilyn Domingo walked and had two RBIs.
Bridgette Carroll had an RBI base hit.
Sophia Page singled once for the Cubs.
Mackenzie Taylor was stuck with the loss.
Taylor allowed seven runs (four earned) on 11 hits.
She went all seven, walked three and struck out five Artesia batters.
Vanessa Soto went 2-for-4 with a double, home run, scored twice and drove in four.
Torres walked, doubled and scored.
Alea Medina singled twice and scored.
Allisiah Valenzuela doubled and scored.
Jazlynn Jara walked and had an RBI single.
Silvanna Rodriguez singled, scored and had an RBI for the Pioneers.
