Girls Tennis:

Thanks to Maranatha tennis for this report

Edges Quartz Hill, 11-7, in Tense 1st Rd. of CIF-SS Playoffs

In a match that was intense throughout, the young Lady Minutemen were baptized into the tension and excitement of playoff tennis.

It was their singles lineup that opened up strong, with Stella Hsieh, Natalie Arminak, and Audrey Loh sweeping their opponents, 6-0, 6-2, 6-1.

Doubles 1 & 2 lost their sets, leaving the back and forth set at the #3 doubles slot to determine whether the match would be even, or if Maranatha would be leading after the 1st round.

#3 Nelli Breuer/Marie Wolfrum outlasted their opponents, 7-5, to put MHS ahead, 4-2.

The second round was as tight as the first.

Hsieh won her set, 6-0, but Arminak and Loh lost hard-fought sets.

#1 doubles Kasey McCoy/Esmee Eaton shook off their rust and rebounded to win their set, 6-0, while

#2 Mia Huang/Mia Su lost their 2nd consecutive set.

That put the score at 6-5, with Breuer/Wolfrum once again determining whether the Lady Minutemen would enter the 3rd round tied or in the lead.

It was another seesaw affair that saw them head into a tie-breaker. Though behind, 1-3 in the tie-breaker, they showed character and resolve, coming back to win, 7-5, and giving Maranatha a needed 7-5 lead.

Hsieh then came in with a 6-1 win, followed by Arminak, who played focused tennis, and won, 6-0.

That gave MHS a 9-6 lead with the 3rd round of doubles just getting started.

The win had been clinched, however, as they had enough games to win had the match gone 9-9.

The third round saw Huang/Su get on the board with a 6-4 win, while McCoy/Eaton rallied back from a deficit and set-point to win, 7-5, to give Maranatha the 11-7 final score.

Today’s match was supposed to be played yesterday, but due to inclement weather, was postponed.

Thus, the Lady Minutemen will have to gear up once again to face the #5 seed, Redlands East Valley (REV), less than 24 hours after the close of today’s match.

REV was able to play their 1st round match on Wednesday, defeating Adelanto, 14-4, and giving them a valuable day of rest.

Whether the Lady Minutemen will be able to recover and re-energize themselves enough for their 2nd round match remains to be seen, but what this season has proven is that they will give it their best shot against favored REV.

Round 2 will take place at 2 p.m. on Friday, November 4, at Pasadena High School.
