Girls Volleyball:

The good news: Marshall Fundamental gave perennial Mission Valley League power Gabrielino all they could handle and more.

The bad news: GHS was able to edge the Eagles in five sets.

Gabrielino wrapped up the MVL championship after its 24-26, 25-19, 25-20, 12-25 and 15-10 triumph over Marshall.

The Eagles will almost certainly enter the playoffs as the MVL’s No. 2 seed.

Journey Blueford had four kills and five blocks.

Alexis Delgado contributed seven kills and a pair of aces.

Evelyn Mkhitarian chipped in with seven kills and four aces.

Abigail Garibay finished with eight kills and three aces.

And last but not least, Rory Lorenz provided two kills, a pair of aces and five blocks.

Lauren Sandoval ran the offense throughout and saved many bad receptions from the back row.

She finished with 25 assists

Although the Eagles left GHS disappointed, matches like this will help prepare them for what they hope is a deep run in the CIF-SS playoffs.

Up next: The Eagles will host El Monte on Friday at 3:30.

Quotable:

Marshall Fundamental coach, Jeffrey Thai: “We always want to test ourselves against the strongest teams, so our players were hyped to go into this match against the Mission Valley League leader. Our goal was to put up the biggest fight and that nearly led us to victory. Although we did not walk away with the win, I am extremely proud of how each and every one of our players performed. During our post game meeting, I reminded our team that our job is not yet done. We now want to go back into practice and prepare to close out the season by securing the second seed.”

Records: Marshall Fundamental (17-7, 7-2); Gabrielino (14-7, 8-0)
