Girls Tennis:
In a contest between the Olympic League’s top two teams, Tuesday’s winner would take a large step towards a league title.
And it Maranatha that came out on the right side of an 11-7 decision over the Defenders.
Maranatha was able to jump out to a 4-2 lead in the 1st round behind the strong play of #1 and #2 singles, Stella Hsieh and Natalie Arminak (6-2, 6-1), and #2 and #3 doubles, Mia Huang/Mia Su and Nelli Breuer/Marie Wolfrum (6-3, 6-2).
MHS doubled that score in the 2nd round, as #1 doubles, Kasey McCoy/Esmee Eaton, and Huang/Su each contributed 6-2 victories.
The Defenders roared back in the 3rd round, pulling to within 9-7, when last season’s second best player for MHS, Audrey Loh, stepped on the court for the first time this season to try to make a contribution. Loh, who has been unable to play for months, had not even been able to make one practice this season, nevermind play in a match.
It was shades of famed New York Knicks center, Willis Reed, as Loh stepped on the court, much to the shock of her teammates. Her playing today was not even a thought while the Lady Minutemen made their way to the match in Cerritos.
Loh showed a lot of courage and heart in trying to help her team. In an inspiring performance for the ages, Loh somehow mustered up the will to defeat the Defenders’ #2 player, 6-3, giving MHS a needed boost, to the delight and awe of her teammates, who know how difficult the journey has been for Loh.
It was the Maranatha’s 5th straight win, leaving them 6-3 overall and 3-0 in league.
The Lady Minutemen host the Providence Pioneers on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at Pasadena High School in a non-league match. It is the first-ever girls tennis meeting between the schools.
