Just 28 days ago, the Bonita High School football program walked off the field in its season opener having dropped a 36-35 decision to visiting Monrovia in overtime.

In that game, the Bearcats had a 14-point lead that disappeared, they came back late to tie it, but fell short because of a personal foul and a pair of missed extra-point attempts.

Fast forward to September 16th, and Bonita led by 14 (21-7), saw that cushion evaporate, and found themselves trailing Los Osos, 27-21, with 1:51 to play.

The Grizzlies’ Mason Overacker had just hit Jaylen Mooring on a 54-yard TD strike, but the extra-point attempt failed, and LOHS had to settle for a six-point lead.

Throughout the first five games of his senior season, BHS quarterback Daniel Andrade has made some huge throws, as well as his share of turnovers.

What many might not know, however, is that Andrade is just starting to get a regular feeling back in his throwing hand, and even through the down moments, he’s still found a way to put the Bearcats in position to win on Friday nights.

And such was the case last night.

After falling behind six points, Andrade would need just 49 seconds to get BHS into the east end zone.

He found his super-sophomore, Noah Mikhail, on a long throw to the Los Osos 30-yard line, and it had many on the visiting side thinking the ball hit the turf.

One play later, Andrade found Mikhail on a 30-yard TD pass to catch the Grizzlies at 27-27, and the scoreboard read 1:02 remaining.

This time around, a different kicker, Alexander Laguna, made his extra-point attempt, and after a turnover on downs, Bonita defeated Los Osos, 28-27, to improve to 3-2.

The look of anguish on the young faces of the Grizzlies’ players on Friday was just as tough to see as it was four weeks ago for the Bearcats.

But these are the type of competitive, back-and-forth games that will benefit both programs as they head into league play and the postseason.

Bonita’s star of the game had to be sophomore Cole Parra.

Parra scored on TD runs of 5 and 3 yards, and he returned an Overacker pass for a 30-yard pick-six to give BHS a 21-7 lead,

For Los Osos, the game started much better than it ended, as Andrew Garcia brought the opening kickoff back for a 90-yard TD.

After falling behind by 14 points, Los Osos got a 44-yard TD run from Overacker, and Jacob Valladarez would get the Grizzlies even with his 5-yard TD run with 7:25 left in the fourth quarter.

But after the Andrade-to-Mikhail strike, and a defensive stop, Los Osos would fall to 2-3.

Below are a few highlights, as well as interviews with Bonita coach Steve Bogan, Daniel Andrade, Cole Parra and Noah Mikhail.
