Girls Tennis:

Maranatha played solid overall tennis today en route to defeating an upstart Blair team, 13-5.

Two seasons ago, COVID-19 struck and neither school was able to field a full squad when they played one another.

Today, both teams are young and inexperienced, but have the talent and potential to grow into solid squads in the future … perhaps even this season.

Singles and doubles each won their brackets, with 6 and 7 wins respectively.

They were paced by the undefeated play of #1 singles, Stella Hsieh (6-1, 6-0, 6-0), #2 singles, Natalie Arminak (6-4, 6-1 before she was subbed out), and #2 doubles, Mia Huang/Mia Su (6-1, 7-5 before being subbed out).

Huang/Su came back from a 1-4 deficit against the #1’s in their second set to get the 7-5 win, while Arminak fought back from 2-4 to win, 6-4 in her opening set.

#1 doubles, Kasey McCoy/Esmee Eaton, lost a heartbreaker in the opening set, 5-7, coming within a putaway forehand volley of leading, 6-5, rather than trailing, 5-6, and changing the momentum of the see-saw set.

They then proceeded to win the following 2 sets, 6-0, 6-0. #3 doubles Marie Wolfrum/Nelli Breuer chipped in with 6-1, 6-0 wins in their strongest showing of the season thus far, while #3 singles, Kathryn Khalil, contributed a 6-1 set.

Today marked the varsity debut of freshmen, Diana Sarksyan and Audrey Ayrapetyan, who as alternates have diligently working on their games in hopes of getting some playing time.

They made the most of their opportunity, registering a 6-0 score against the Vikings’ alternates.

Though nervous at their first chance to play in a match, their camaraderie and mutual support was evident.

The Lady Minutemen will face stiffer competition on Thursday, as they travel to the Moors of Alhambra for their final pre-league match of the season.

The match begins at 3:30 p.m.
