Maranatha & Bishop Montgomery End in 35-35 ‘Tie’ After Knights Decline to Play Overtime Period

Football:

When Bishop Montgomery and Maranatha met up Friday night in Pasadena, either the Knights or Minutemen would suffer their first setback of 2022.

Oh, actually, disregard that premise.

After finishing regulation at 35-35, Bishop Montgomery declined an overtime period and yet the Knights were granted a tie.

From a number of reports, the Bishop Montgomery players were cramping quite a bit and with the heavy rain, heat and humidity, injuries were of paramount concern for both sides.

In this reporter’s view, however, declining to play it out should have meant Maranatha was Friday night’s winner.

It’s my own opinion and I can certainly agree to disagree with those of a differing mindset.

But let’s get back to the game.

Bishop Montgomery took a 21-14 lead into the break and entered the fourth quarter with a 35-28 advantage over the Minutemen.

MHS scored once in the fourth to tie the game, but it ended the way we mentioned above.

Diego Rodriguez was 20-of-37 for 219 yards and four TD’s for the Knights.

Justin Auston had three catches for 90 yards and two TD’s.

Rodriguez led the Knights’ ground game with 40 yards on 11 carries and one score.

For Maranatha, quarterback Michael Martin, who entered the contest with nine total TD’s, went 9-of-17 for 101 yards.

He threw a pair of TD passes and was intercepted once.

Martin also rushed for 46 yards on 12 carries.

Miles O’Malley was a beast, gaining 172 yards on 19 carries and three TD’s.

Jah Reeves led Maranatha with four catches for 49 yards and had both receiving TD’s.

Connor Patterson caught three passes for 47 yards and Samuel Funches had three receptions for 16 yards.

Carter Shupper had a monster night with 12 tackles, including two for loss.

Up next: MHS will travel out to Upland on Thursday night to take on Western Christian at 7.

Quotable:

Maranatha coach, Rand Holdren: “It took us a minute to get going, but we played our hearts out in the second half and rallied. Unfortunately, we see this as a loss and I take full responsibility for it. I didn’t make the adjustments we needed fast enough in the first half and I have to put our kids in position to be successful. That didn’t happen tonight.”

Quote in regards to the tie: “With four minutes left in the game, we had the momentum and the white hat ran over to me and said, “Coach, they don’t want to play overtime.” Not sure how that call can be made during the game.”

Box Score:
BM: 0-21-14-0-(35)
M: 0-14-14-7-(35)

Records: Bishop Montgomery (3-0-1); Maranatha (2-0-1)
