Girls Volleyball:

Marshall Fundamental dropped its first Mission Valley League match against perennial MVL power Gabrielino.

And while the outcome wasn’t what they had hoped for, this Eagles program is taking huge strides forward.

Gabrielino won by scores of 25-23, 27-25, 18-25 and 25-18.

The match had a lot of drama, including stoppage of play and the opposing coach being tossed.

Abigail Garibay and Rory Lorenz both had five kills apiece.

Journey Blueford contributed eight blocks and two kills.

Alexis Delgado chipped in with four kills and three aces.

And Evelyn Mkhitarian had 11 kills, three aces and two blocks.

Up next: The Eagles travel to El Monte on Monday at 3:30.

Quotable:

Marshall Fundamental coach, Jeffrey Thai: “We were the underdogs going into this match, but we sure didn’t play like it. We challenged everything Gabrielino threw at us, and we led most of the sets. They played their hearts out and although we lost, we are not upset with the effort we put out tonight. Even with all the drama that unfolded, our girls still pulled through and took a set from them which has never happened at Marshall. Our players were visibly tired at the end, but they applied pressure on Gabrielino all night long. We can hold our heads up high and know we put everything out on that court and are definitely excited for our rematch.”

Records: Gabrielino (6-3, 2-0); Marshall Fundamental (10-5, 2-1)
