Bonita Faces Tesoro in Friday’s CIF D-3 Championship; Bearcats Have Shot at Winning First Softball Title in School History

May 19 2022 05:49:07

Softball:

No biggie.

Since the last time Bonita made an appearance in the CIF-SS title game, the administrations of Ronald Reagan, George HW Bush, Bill Clinton, George W Bush, Barack Obama and Donald Trump have come and gone.

The Bearcats fell in the 1979 championship game, but 43 years later, Bonita is primed and ready to take on Tesoro on Friday afternoon at Deanna Manning Stadium in Irvine.

The first pitch is set for 12:30.

And speaking of pitching, perhaps no one has played a bigger role in the program’s success than BHS ace, Brooklyn Shroyer.

The Bearcats’ junior has been nothing short of sensational.

Shroyer is 20-2 in the circle, with a 1.00 ERA.

She’s walked 13 batters and had 202 strikeouts in 139 1/3 innings.

Shroyer has 17 complete games in 22 starts, and that includes a perfect game against Kennedy in the second round of the playoffs.

In postseason victories over El Rancho, Kennedy, Sunny Hills and Temescal Canyon, Shroyer has gone the distance in each, and has surrendered just three earned runs on 13 hits.

She’s walked three and struck out 47 opposing batters.

But this isn’t a one-dimensional team.

The Bearcats play solid defense behind her, and that includes Brooklyn’s twin sister, Bryce Shroyer, who serves as Bonita’s catcher.

And the BHS offense features contributors from batters 1-9 in their lineup.

Alyssa Doucette, the Bearcats’ star sophomore, leads the way.

She’s batting a team-high .398, with 45 hits, 28 runs, 24 RBIs, eight doubles, one triple & six HR’s.

Hailey Marquez is another offensive threat.

Marquez is batting at a .380 clip, with 30 hits, eight runs, 25 RBIs, six doubles & three HR’s.

Bonita has also gotten huge contributions from Kailey Scott (.330, 32 hits, 19 runs, 15 RBIs, five doubles, three triples & one HR), Mireya Rico (.346, 28 hits, 19 runs, 16 RBIs, five doubles & two HR’s), Kali Blount (.302, 26 hits, 18 runs, 22 RBIs seven doubles, one triple & four HR’s), Lauryn Ureno (.283, 17 hits, 20 runs, 12 RBIs, two doubles & one HR) and Bryce Shroyer (.267, 16 hits, four runs, 13 RBIs, three doubles & two HR’s).

Tesoro does not post their season-long stats, but below we were able to make some statistical comparisons.

And towards the bottom of this story are video interviews with Coach Baumunk, Mireya Rico, Hailey Marquez, Alyssa Doucette, Lauryn Ureno, Kali Blount, Kailey Scott and Bryce Shroyer.

For the record, Brooklyn Shroyer was not at practice on Wednesday, which is why there is no interview with the Bearcats ace.

It goes without saying that almost everyone in the SGV sports world will be a Bonita softball fan for about two hours on Friday afternoon.

Good luck to Coach Baumunk, his staff and their players.

Quotable:

Bonita coach, Darren Baumunk: “Our girls have been really fired up since the playoffs began, and I think what makes this team so special is that each girl has accepted their role and they all put the team ahead of their own individual interests. In the circle, Brooklyn Shroyer has been amazing and offensively, we’ve gotten production from everyone in our lineup. I know there will be some nerves on Friday, which is normal, but our girls will be ready and are embracing the opportunity.”
