Boys Tennis:

Two weeks ago, the Maranatha boys tennis program was undefeated and in sole possession of first place in the Coastal League, with just two matches to go.

Then came the down-to-the-wire 8-10 loss to Geffen Academy at UCLA.

All of a sudden, the Minutemen were facing the possibility of finishing second in league with a loss to the Crusaders of Village Christian in the league and regular season finale.

While Village Christian came into today’s match in rhythm, having played two matches last week, Maranatha came in after being off for 10 days for Spring Break.

MHS Coach Arthur Hsieh knew that his team was susceptible for an upset and would have to lean on his senior captains.#1 Tim Huang and #2 Nico Engling, to set the pace.

That’s exactly what they did, coming out blazing in the final regular season match of their careers.

Huang and Engling came focused and ready to play, each sweeping their opponents convincingly, 6-1, 6-1, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, respectively.

In their previous meeting with the Crusaders’ #1 singles player, Elijah Ngai, they won 6-3 and 7-6 (6). #3 Laci Szabo did his part as well, winning two sets, 6-4 and 6-0.

Doubles is where the rust showed most, as they won only 3 sets, paced by two wins from #1 doubles, senior Jordan Miao and junior Joshua Im. The doubles lineup came up just short in 5 of their other sets against the Crusaders’ strong doubles teams.

With today’s win on Senior Day, the Minutemen sent their seniors off with the Coastal League title, which they will share with Geffen Academy at UCLA.

The Class of 2022 is represented by Tim Huang, Nico Engling, Jordan Miao, Sean Tang, and Jonathan Jo.
