Baseball:
There was every reason to believe that Friday’s Prep League showdown between Rio Hondo Prep and last-place Providence would be a snoozefest.
Two days prior, the Kares picked up a 12-0 road victory against the Pioneers.
But on Friday, there was no lack of excitement or drama.
Rio Hondo Prep defeated Providence, 13-12, in eight innings.
The game featured 25 combined runs, 25 hits and nine errors.
Providence got three runs in the top of the eighth inning, and RHP answered with four.
Connor Cafferty got the loss after allowing seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits over his four innings.
He walked four and struck out one.
Gio Ortega doubled twice, scored and drove in a game-high five runs.
Jonathan Guerrero singled twice, doubled, scored twice and had two RBIs.
Raymond Montez went 2-for-4 and scored three runs.
Ryan McCulloch walked, singled, doubled, scored twice and had one RBI.
Trevor Scott went 2-for-5, with a double, two RBIs and scored a pair of runs.
Paul Alena doubled and scored, and Damyan Diaz walked, singled and scored.
Calvin Johnson walked and singled twice for RHP.
Montez would get the win after going three innings and allowing four unearned runs on four hits.
Montez did not issue a walk and struck out two.
Cafferty doubled, scored and drove in two runs for Providence.
Andrew Malong singled twice, scored two runs and had a pair of RBIs.
Sutton Frost walked, singled twice and had an RBI.
Up next: The Kares travel to Poly on Tuesday.
