Baseball:

If you play the game long enough, baseball provides the highest of highs, but a knee to the groin is never too far away.

Last week, Bonita fell to fourth-place Alta Loma and last-place Colony, after beginning Palomares League play 3-0.

To make matters worse, they haven’t had the SGV area’s most dominant pitcher, Luke Mistone, in a few weeks, and the Bearcats aren’t sure when he’ll get the ball next.

But just as people were beginning to count Bonita out, they go over to Chino Hills and shut out first-place Ayala, 7-0.

The win, coupled by Glendora’s five-run victory at Alta Loma, has the Bearcats, Bulldogs and Tartans tied atop the league standings.

Garrett Patterson threw a five-hit shutout, walked two and struck out three Ayala batters.

Patterson needed 91 pitches to finish what he started.

Roman Lopez doubled for Ayala and Marcus Galvan, Aiden Nunez, Jake Lemoine and Andrew Torres singled to account for the Bulldogs offense.

Andres Pasillas was stuck with the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits over his two innings of work.

Pasillas walked one and surrendered two home runs.

Bonita got four more off Randy Limon on four hits, including one HR.

JT Fenton, Seth Wrightstone and Daniel Munoz all hit solo shots in the win.

Luke Mistone walked doubled and scored.

Adrian Lopez went 2-for-4, with two RBIs.

Diego Vazquez singled scored for the Bearcats.

Tyler Holley walked, scored and had an RBI on a sac fly.

Bonita and Ayala meet up Thursday in La Verne, but the Bearcats have already clinched the series with wins in the first two games.

Quotable:

Bonita coach, Ryan Marcos: “Patty did a great job on the bump keeping Ayala hitters off balance for seven innings. Our defense was tough as nails all game too. Hitters were attacking the ball and put pressure on a very good Ayala team. This league is tough and anyone can beat anyone any given day, so it comes down to playing and practicing with an intensity and purpose every single day.”

Bonita pitcher, Garrett Patterson: “We came off a rough week and we kind of took a step back and had to realize that we needed to come out stronger this week and forget about the past. For me today, my change-up was locating well and my curve was great. The offense helped a lot by getting us started early and I knew nothing was going to get in between us and the win.”
