College Baseball:

PCC’s Matt Rice didn’t even enter Saturday’s third and final SCC game against first-place ELAC until the top of the eighth inning.

He replaced Matt Delgado behind the plate in a 1-1 tie.

In the bottom of the ninth, Rice got his first at-bat.

And with two out and nobody on, Rice jumped on David Morales’ first pitch and hit a game-winning solo shot over the right-center field wall for the 2-1 victory.

PCC’s claimed its fourth consecutive series victory by a two-games to one margin over Mt. SAC, LA Harbor, Long Beach and now ELAC.

The Lancers also got a tremendous outing from two pitchers, Coleman Mitchell and Nicolas Day.

Mitchell went seven strong innings.

The former Monrovia right-hander allowed just an unearned and scattered seven hits.

Mitchell didn’t walk anyone and struck out six.

Day went two perfect innings in relief and was credited with the win.

Jason Vela singled and scored on a PCC error in the top of the sixth inning.

Eduardo Sanchez singled twice for ELAC.

Francisco Dominguez allowed one run on five hits over his six innings.

He didn’t walk a batter and struck out two.

David Morales got the loss, allowing the two-out, walk-off home run to Rice.

Kenny Kim walked, singled and scored on Andrew Scanell’s sac fly in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score at 1-1.

Jake Trabbie, Toshiki Kuriya and Matt Delgado had one single apiece for the Lancers.

Up next: PCC will play two nonconference games next week with Victor Valley, including Tuesday’s trip to Victorville.

Quotable:

PCC coach, Pat McGee: “Matt has done an outstanding job with the bat for us all year. It’s great to see him have success. He has put in the time and hard work to develop his swing. He earned  this moment. Coleman pitched with great tempo again, pounding the zone and threw three pitches for strikes. He always gives his team a chance to win. Day was great, pounded the strikezone, picked a runner off and just competed well. These kids work hard, prepare and are resilient. They’ve done a great job moving on from adversity.”

PCC catcher, Matt Rice : “It was surreal feeling once the ball went over the fence. I was just passing second base when I saw my teammates jumping up and down and running towards the plate. I was just happy to do my part. I would like to play as often as I can, but I’ll do whatever my coaches and teammates need from me. Our pitching really stepped up this week and we got another important series win. Coleman really battled out there and put us in a position to win. Nicco came in and shut their offense down. I didn’t have a great senior year offensively, and I think it was just a mental switch. I got a lot of confidence working with Coach McGee throughout the fall and building on my approach. This freshman season is going far better than I could have expected.”
