Baseball:

Marshall Fundamental opened Mission Valley League play on Wednesday and rode the strong right arm of Travis Delgado to a 2-1 victory.

Just after Arroyo had tied the game in the top of the seventh inning, The Eagles got a walk-off, RBI double from Nick Chew to defeat a Knights team that is expected to challenge Marshall for the MVL title.

Delgado went the distance and allowed just an unearned run on four hits.

He walked two and struck out seven to earn the win.

Delgado needed 94 pitches to close out the Knights.

Aaron Martinez walked in the seventh and scored on a throwing error to tie the game at 1-1.

Julian Barajas went the first four innings and allowed one run on one hit.

He walked two and fanned 10 Marshall batters.

Aaron Martinez got stuck with the loss after allowing the seventh-inning run.

Chew’s double plated Conrad Hunziker.

Sam Karp walked, singled, doubled and drove in a run.

Wes Pendleton doubled and scored and along with scoring the game-winning run, Hunziker also singled on Wednesday.

Delgado singled for Marshall.

Up next: The Eagles will host Gabrielino on Friday afternoon.

Quotable:

Marshall pitcher, Travis Delgado: “When I’m on the mound, I’m trying to have an efficient outing and go as deep as I can. I have all the faith in the world in my teammates, but I want to be the guy with the ball in my hand when the game is on the line. After they tied the game in the top of the seventh, I was frustrated, but my teammates saw that and told me, ‘we’ve got your back,’ and they scored the game winner in the bottom of the seventh. It was a very important win, because Arroyo is a program that we expect a serious challenge from. I felt really good out there today and I had five days of rest, so it felt good to do my part in a big win.”
