Baseball:

For the second time this week, it looked like Bonita was going to watch a late-inning lead slip away.

But unlike Monday, the Bearcats persevered in their Palomares League opener.

Bonita was able to edge visiting Ayala, 7-5, after out-hitting the Bulldogs 14-4.

Luke Mistone got the win after going the first four scoreless innings.

Mistone allowed just one hit, walked five and struck out six.

Ayala got to Justin Santiago for five fifth-inning runs and got as close as 6-5.

Santiago was charged with five runs on three hits over the final three innings.

He walked three and struck out two.

Ty Borgogno walked twice, singled and scored from the leadoff spot.

Vinny Hudson singled, scored and drove in two runs for Ayala.

Ethan Nunez walked, singled and had two RBIs.

Andrew Torres walked and had an RBI, and Elijah Ibanez scored for the Bulldogs.

Hudson was stuck with the loss after allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits and two walks over his 2 1/3 innings.

Mistone helped himself by going 3-for-3 with three RBIs.

Bryan Bradshaw walked twice, singled and scored a pair of runs.

Garrett Patterson went 2-for-4, with three runs and an RBI.

Morgan Smith singled twice, doubled, and scored.
