Girls Basketball:

It was Senior Night at La Salle High School.

The Lancers would pick up a 52-point victory over visiting St. Joseph on Thursday.

It was also La Salle’s 13th consecutive win, and the Lancers improved to 7-0 in Camino Real League games.

But what happened on the first possession of the game was so much more important and special than the outcome of any basketball game.

La Salle honored its two seniors, Itzel Sosa, and Chaminade transfer, Megan Ortiz.

Sosa has been a part of the program since Scott Wiard took over a few years ago.

And in October, Sosa tore her ACL and she was done for the season.

But Wiard wanted to pay Sosa back for her loyalty, hard work and dedication to the Lancers’ program.

He contacted St. Joseph to see if they would allow Sosa to get the ball on the first play of the game and score.

St. Joseph obviously has a heart of gold, because after listening to Wiard’s description of all that Sosa has gone through, including the fact that she hadn’t seen one second of time during her senior season, the Jesters were all in.

After the tip, Sosa got an uncontested pass from Audrey Chen.

She turned to her right and banked in a layup in the west basket.

After the ball went through the net, her teammates couldn’t hide their excitement as their buddy limped off the court, but she was beaming with pride.

Instead of seeing how inundated news and sports sites have become with negative and divisive stories, this country and this world could use more examples of love and generosity like St. Joseph showed Itzel Sosa.

On behalf of this site, I wanted to say thank you to St. Joseph for showing so much class and heart.

And lastly, congratulations to Itzel Sosa for getting a moment you so richly deserved.
