John Honell Column: Travel Tips For Northview Football Fans

The CIF State Division 4A Championship game between Northview and Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep will be held in Kezar Stadium on Saturday night.

The original Kezar was home to the San Francisco 49ers and, more importantly, was the site where Dirty Harry hunted down Scorpio.

It was torn down in 1989, because of damage suffered during the “World Series Earthquake” that year

The new stadium is also in Golden Gate Park, which features 1,000 acres of some of the most beautiful land that California has to offer (unless the fog has rolled in).

In 1967, I attended a 49ers game at the old Kezar and the seagulls flying overhead were not only a distraction, but a real danger.

The new Kezar is much smaller than the old one, so that means there will be more seagulls per seat.

Take an umbrella.

During the Summer of Love in 1967, there were almost as many hippies sleeping in GG Park as there were seagulls flying overhead.

The hippies are gone (and so is their hair), but the spirit lives on at the corner of Haight and Ashbury, maybe a 10-minute walk from the stadium.

Remember: Kezar loosely translates to “one parking lot.”

Get to the game early enough to get a spot and then walk on over and check it out.

There is an old saying:  If you remember the ’60’s, you weren’t there.

Go ahead, ask grandma and grandpa!

If you searched hotels online you know that nothing is cheap in the city.

After your nostalgic trip to Haight-Ashbury, you could just pitch your tent in the park and tell the cops you are trying to relive your youth. (In SF they’ll buy that)

In a pinch, turn the volume on your phone way up and play some Grateful Dead music (you can get all their music at the Haight) and tell them you are a friend of Bill Walton. (They really will buy that)
