College Football:

PCC has displayed its mettle all season.

But never in a bigger moment than Saturday night’s SoCal Bowl game against Santa Ana College.

The Lancers trailed the Dons, 21-14, with nine minutes to play at Santa Ana Stadium.

Justen Campbell would score on a 28-yard TD run to get PCC even at 21-21.

And less than three minutes later, Kade Wentz and Miles Anderson hooked up on a 95-yard TD pass for what turned out to be the game-winning score.

PCC would hold on for a 28-21 victory.

After Santa Ana quarterback Ceasar Ayala tossed a 32 TD pass to Kristian Consta in the first quarter, the Lancers got even when Miles Anderson scored on a 4-yard TD run.

PCC took its first lead of the game when Jordan Monroe picked off an Ayala pass and brought it back 97 yards for a pick-six TD, and a 14-7 lead.

Santa Ana regained the lead when Ayala threw a pair of second-quarter TD passes.

But as mentioned, the Lancers closed the game on a 14-0 run.

PCC quarterback Kade Wentz was very effective, completing 18 of his 24 pass attempts for 268 yards, including the 95-yard TD pass to Miles Anderson with 6:24 to play.

Wentz was also named the SoCal Bowl MVP.

Miles Anderson scored the Lancers’ first and final TD’s of the game.

Anderson had a pair of receptions for 96 yards, and rushed for 14 yards on eight carries.

Wheeler Smith caught three passes for 62 yards.

Jeremiah Hatfield had a team-high five receptions for 44 yards.

For the Dons, Ayala completed 24 of 44 for 228 yards.

Ayala threw three TD passes, but he was picked three times.

Along with Monroe, Salah Odeh and Jalen Thornton both intercepted a Santa Ana pass.

It was Thornton’s pick late in the fourth quarter that sealed the Lancers’ victory.

The PCC defense rose to the occasion again, shutting out the Dons offense in the second half.

Lucio Rodriguez had a team-high nine tackles, while Oswaldo Raigosa and Michelangelo Loretto tallied eight tackles apiece.

Kaydon Spens and Roland Rodrigues contributed seven tackles each.

Spens blocked a 26-yard Santa Ana field goal attempt in the third quarter, and a punt.

That gives the PCC sophomore a state-leading fifth block in 2021.

Garey Ferman led the Dons’ ground game with 152 yards on 17 carries.

PCC improved to 9-2 after the bowl victory, and the Lancers extended their win streak to five games.
