Football:

Glendora saw its historical season come to an end on Saturday night in Apple Valley.

The Sun Devils jumped out to an early 14-0, first-quarter lead, and Apple Valley held on for a 17-15 victory in the quarterfinal round of the CIF-SS Division 3 playoffs.

GHS was obviously disappointed their season came to an end, and they had plenty of time to process the loss on the 61-mile drive home.

When the hurt subsides, however, this 2021 Glendora High Football team will have solace of mind in knowing they’ll be in the history books until the end of time after becoming the first in school history to finish the regular season undefeated.

They’re obviously the only (football) team at GHS to win their first 11 games as well.

As mentioned, the Sun Devils took a 14-0, first-half lead, thanks to a 20-and-5-yard TD runs from Dustin Reynolds.

Jake Denerson would pull GHS to within 14-6 when he scored on a 16-yard TD run.

The extra-point was no good.

Jack Norell booted a 28-yard field goal in the second quarter and the Tartans trailed, 14-9.

But just before the half, Brady Weinberg gave Apple Valley a huge shot in the arm, when he made a 47-yard field goal.

The Sun Devils took a 17-9 lead into the break.

In the third quarter, Reggie Johnson and Jake Denerson hooked up on a 36-yard scoring strike.

The Tartans attempted a 2-point conversion in the hopes of tying the game, but GHS failed and the Sun Devils maintained its 17-15 lead.

And that’s exactly how the game would end.

The stingy Glendora defense held Apple Valley scoreless in the second half, and most impressively, the Tartans D was able to keep the Sun Devils to 27 points under their weekly scoring average.

Northwestern University commit, Braydon Brus, ended his remarkable football career at GHS with 81 yards rushing on 17 carries.

Zach Ford carried the ball five times for 42 yards.

Jake Denerson finished 5 of 12 for 76 yards, including the TD pass to Reggie Johnson.

Johnson had two catches for 47 yards.

Christian Sampson picked off an Apple Valley pass.
