Eleventh-seeded Northview knocked off third-seeded Kaiser, 42-13, in the CIF-SS Division 10 quarterfinals Friday night at Covina District Field.

It is the biggest upset for the Vikings since since 1997, when they defeated top-seeded, Rancho Alamitos, which was also a quarterfinal round matchup.

Current Vikings coach, Marcel Perez, was a senior on that team, and led the defense in two goal-line stands to preserve that win.

The Vikings (6-6) will play the winner of Saturday’s Covina-Palmdale game next week in a semifinal matchup.

The Colts and Falcons kick off tonight (Saturday) at 7:30 at Covina District Field.

The Vikings scored on their first three possessions, taking a 20-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

“We knew what we were supposed to do tonight and we executed it to a tee,” Perez said. “We challenged our guys this week. They (Kaiser) rushed for 650 yards last and we said, “hey, we stop the run, that’s what we do.”

The Vikings Erik Saiz took the opening kickoff out to his 45-yard line and it took them six plays to get into the end zone.

Cheo Medina ran two yards for the score and a 6-0 lead just 2:07 into the game.

Medina carried the ball five times on the drive and ended up with 98 yards on 17 carries.

Medina scored three touchdowns to lead the Vikings’ ground game.

Northview took to the air for their next three scores, with junior quarterback James Arellanes connecting once with Saiz and twice with senior Steven Carlin for a 27-0 lead at the half.

“We saw they liked to stack the box,” Arellanes said. “We said the heck with it, we’d throw the ball and make them change, but my defense was amazing, they really stepped it up at the best time of the year.”

Arellanes completed nine of 11 passes for 122 yards and three touchdowns.

Carlin also had an interception in the first half as the Vikings shut down the Cats passing game.

“That was probably my biggest game of the season,” Carlin said. “That was my first interception on varsity. This year was a roller coaster for all of us, but we were able to stay together and make a statement tonight.”

The Vikings held the Cats to 122 yards rushing, including a 32-yard run late in the game after the Vikings had cleared their bench.

“We knew it was going to be smash mouth tonight,” Vikings defense captain Adrien Gonzales said.” They rushed for 650 yards last week and we just played as one and stopped them. I think this was our best defensive game of the year.”
