Football:

Claremont sure picked a great time to find its stride.

Since starting the season 1-4, the Wolfpack have won five of their last six games.

And over that stretch, the CHS defense has shut out three opponents, including the last two.

On Friday, Claremont went to El Monte to take on unbeaten Arroyo in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 9 playoffs.

Nathan Giles got the Wolfpack on the board in the first quarter when he sprinted in from 11 yards out.

Giles would extend the CHS lead to 12-0 after hitting Kyle Ferm on a 22-yard scoring strike in the second quarter.

And the Claremont D would do the rest in a 12-0 victory.

Some of the Wolfpack’s defensive highlights included:

Jaden Mclemore and Garrett Sanin picking off Arroyo passes.

Jamil Oliver forced a fumble.

Darius Eaves had four tackles for loss, and a quarterback sack.

Xander Lopez tallied three tackles for a loss.

And Julian Zacarias had one tackle for loss.

The only thing that didn’t go Claremont’s way was missing an extra-point attempt after the first score and failing on a 2-point conversion after Giles’ TD pass to Ferm.

Up next: CHS will host Laguna Beach on Friday night.

The Breakers (10-1) defeated Chino, 42-21, in their first-round contest.
