It should and it does seem ludicrous that a 9-1 football team isn’t a lock to make the CIF-SS playoffs.
And yet that’s the scenario facing the Rio Hondo Prep football program.
RHP cruised to a 56-14 victory over visiting Viewpoint on Thursday night, and as odd as this might sound, the game was far more of a blowout than the final score might indicate.
The Kares scored the game’s first 49 points and improved to 2-1 in Gold Coast League games.
Rio Hondo Prep’s lone defeat was a seven-point setback to undefeated Campbell Hall and the Kares have outscored their opponents by a margin of 445-125.
RHP had a 292-26 advantage over the Patriots in rushing yards.
Jonathan Guerrero finished with 158 yards rushing on 16 carries.
Guerrero scored on TD runs of 4, 27 and 14 yards.
The Kares senior also became the third player in school history to reach the 3,000 (rushing) yard mark.
Ryan McCulloch had 70 yards rushing on three carries.
McCulloch had TD runs of 33 and 32 yards.
Gio Ortega brought a kickoff back 97 yards for a score and Ortega threw a 49-yard TD pass to Calvin Johnson.
Ortega showed off his versatility once again.
After RHP kicker Trevor Scott got injured, Ortega filled in and went 6-for-6 on extra-point attempts.
Damyan Diaz hit Armando Carbajal on a 44-yard scoring strike.
Aaron Saiz had three tackles and an interception for the RHP defense.
Nathan Curtis also picked the Viewpoint quarterback.
Calvin Johnson led the Kares defense with 4.5 tackles.
