Thanks to Maranatha for this report

Girls Tennis:

On Geffen’s Senior Day, the Div. 5  No. 9 ranked Lady Minutemen came the closest they have all season to the mighty Bruins of Geffen Academy/UCLA (D4 #5 ranked).

The deep Bruins made line up adjustments, which nearly proved costly for them in the end.

As she has all season, No. 1 singles, Stella Hsieh, led the way for Maranatha, with a 6-1, 6-0, 6-0 sweep of a line-up that saw Geffen move their #1 singles player, Jenelle Liu, to doubles today.

No. 2 singles, Audrey Loh, played a very shaky opening set, losing 6-0 to the Bruins’ No. 2, Maya Kamangar. Loh was able to regroup and play a completely different brand of tennis the rest of the way, winning 6-1 and 6-2 against the #3 and #1.

No. 3 Violet Salvo fought hard but came up short in her first two sets, losing each, 3-6. Kamangar had to forfeit the final set to Salvo due to injury.

Doubles had a rough outing today, with No. 1 and  No. 2 doubles, Amanda Yee/Kasey McCoy and Riley McCoy/Stella Chen getting swept (3-6, 4-6, 0-6 and 1-6, 1-6, 2-6).

The big surprise of the day came as #3 Esmee Eaton/Helena Chen (both newcomers to tennis this year) not only won MHS’s only doubles set of the day against Geffen’s #3 (6-3), but in doing so, won their first set of the season. It was bound to happen for the duo, as they have been improving with every match, and have starting coming very close to winning in the last few weeks.

The Lady MInutemen (7-6, 4-3) will seek to clinch a playoff berth next Tuesday, when they host the Heritage Christian Warriors on Senior Day, the final regular season home match in the careers of Amanda Yee and Riley McCoy.
