With the emergence of Geffen UCLA as the class of the Olympic League this season, the real intrigue is the battle for second between Maranatha (D5) and Valley Christian (D4).

At stake is the league’s remaining automatic playoff berth, assuming Geffen secures the first slot.

The Lady Minutemen and the Defenders went toe-to-toe right at the outset, with see-saw sets at the #1 and #2 doubles slots. Midway through the sets, #2 Riley McCoy/Stella Chen were leading 4-3, while #1 Amanda Yee/Kasey McCoy were behind 3-4, trying to catch up from a 1-3 deficit. In two tight finishes, McCoy/Chen ended up falling short, 4-6, while Yee/McCoy completed their comeback for a 7-6 (3) victory, after starting the tie-break, 0-3.

#1 singles, Stella Hsieh, continued her impressive season with another dominant outing. She beat her #1 counterpart, 6-2, while #2 Audrey Loh also continued her breakout season won her first set, 6-1. #3 Violet Salvo lost her first set, 4-6, as did #3 doubles Esmee Eaton/Helena Chen, leaving the overall match tied at 3-3 after the first round.

MHS pulled into the lead in the second round, highlighted by the gutsy performance of Loh, who battled dehydration and exhaustion to eek out a very tight 7-5 victory to put the Lady Minutemen ahead 7-5, after Hsieh (6-0), Yee/McCoy (6-2), and McCoy/Chen (6-2) garnered wins.

Salvo kicked off the third round with a determined 6-2 “upset” of the Defenders’ #2, putting MHS at 8 points. A couple of doubles losses at #2 and #3 drew Valley Christian to within 8-7. However, Hsieh and Yee/McCoy each served up bagels (6-0) against the #3’s to secure the victory. A recovered Loh then played another stellar set to upset the Defenders’ #1, 6-4.

Today’s victory temporarily gives Maranatha sole possession of second place in league, pushing Valley Christian to third. These same teams square off once again on Tuesday at Valley Christian, as the Lady Minutemen seek to gain a stronghold over the race for the league’s final playoff berth. The Defenders will seek to even the series at 1-1 and bring it all down to a deciding final match on the last day of the regular season.
