Girls Tennis:

Playing their third match in as many days, the young upstart Lady Minutemen and the Matadors played neck and neck from beginning to end.

The match came down to the final set of the day, with Maranatha trailing 8-9.

On court was freshman, Violet Salvo (making only her second start at #3 singles), versus San Gabriel’s Kassidy Huynh.

Having lost her first two sets, Salvo was down 2-1, knowing her team needed her victory.

With steel in her veins, she turned her focus up another level and methodically kept increasing her pressure on Huynh, winning the final five games of the set, prevailing 6-2 and securing MHS’s narrow victory..

Maranatha’s victory was an entire team effort.

Each member played a crucial part, and every bit of what everyone produced was needed.

Every bit. #1 singles, Stella Hsieh, “triple-bageled” her opponents today (6-0, 6-0, 6-0), finishing 7-2 on the week.

If she had even gone 6-2, 6-1, 6-1, MHS would have lost. #2 singles, Audrey Loh, won two huge sets at 6-2, 6-0.

#1 doubles Amanda Yee/Kasey McCoy came from behind to win their first set, 7-5, and even the match at 3-3.

It was the only doubles victory of the first round. Round 2 saw more of the same closeness, with #2 doubles Riley McCoy/Stella Chen, stepping up to come from behind to pull out a 6-3 victory, the only doubles victory of the round, leaving the match knotted at 6-6.

With the score 7-9, knowing what was on the line, Yee/McCoy played their most complete set of the day, pulling off a dominant 6-0 victory to make it 8-9 and evening the number of games, should Salvo win the final set to even the overall score, 9-9.

Today’s victory evens the Lady Minutemen’s record at 3-3, with three losses at the hands of higher division opponents and three victories over fellow Division 5 opponents.

Olympic League play opens next Thursday with Maranatha visiting league title favorite, Geffen UCLA, on the Westwood campus.
