Thanks to Maranatha for this report

Girls Tennis:

Three matches in three days. Improve each day.

That was the goal heading into this week’s series of back-to-back-to-back matches.

After the first two matches against higher division opponents, the Lady Minutemen are on course towards reaching their goal.

Head Coach Arthur Hsieh hopes this tough pre-league schedule will serve to toughen up his team and help prepare them to contend in league play.

Facing a tough deep Division 2 opponent that just defeated Mark Keppel (Div. 3), 13-5, the day before (MHS lost to Keppel, 15-3), the Lady Minutemen knew they were outmatched at the outset. However, the question was whether they would compete and continue to learn from the experience.

The answer remains to be seen, but all indications seem to point in the right direction, as the team continues to show progress and seasoning.

In a repeat of yesterday’s match against La Salle, Maranatha’s points were produced by two players, #1 and #2 singles, Stella Hsieh and Audrey Loh.

In a hard-hitting battle of #1’s, Hsieh and the Tigers’ Talia Yoo produced the most exciting set of the day, with Hsieh winning, 6-2. Hsieh suffered a letdown in her second set against Kyra Campbell, unraveling further with each ensuing game, eventually losing, 6-2.

She regained her composure for her final set, playing smart, confident tennis once again, winning, 6-1.

Loh played a terrific, hard-fought opening set against Campbell, before succumbing, 6-3.

She rebounded with a sharp 6-3 victory over Sarin Hwang, before forfeiting her final set due to injury.

Today marked the singles debut of Violet Salvo at the #3 spot. Though she didn’t win a set, she showed determination, heart, and potential.

Today also saw the 2021 doubles debut of Amanda Yee. Yee, the reigning Olympic League doubles MVP, had only played singles this season.

Playing together for the first time, Yee and Kasey McCoy began developing chemistry and nearly pulled out a victory in their second set, losing in a tie-breaker.

They were the only pair to come close to winning a set, as #2 Riley McCoy/Stella Chen and #3 Esmee Eaton/Helena Chen were soundly beaten. Yet, they all continue to show improvement and a growing feel for the game, despite the lopsided scores.

The Lady Minutemen (2-3) complete their grueling week with a visit to San Gabriel High School (Div. 5) tomorrow and will seek to avoid going 0-3 for the week.
