Some coaches and players say they do not believe in moral victories: you’re either a winner or a loser.
The late famed Coach John Wooden would have had something to say about that.
He believed that if a team or player prepared their best and played their best, they were truly winners, regardless of the score.
He taught that you can’t control the other team (if they are better than you, they are better), but you can control yourself; and if you actually played the very best you are capable of playing, how can you not be considered a true winner?
Though the young and inexperienced Lady Minutemen (Div. 5) were dominated by a much stronger, much deeper, more experienced team (Div. 3), they showed improvement from last week’s victory and played their best tennis yet in this young season.
The singles lineup that went 9-0 in their victory last week over YULA, went 1-8 against a strong Aztecs lineup, with #1 singles,
Stella Hsieh, picking up their lone victory, winning 6-1. She went toe to toe with her opponents in her two losses, but couldn’t make up for their greater experience. Both #2 Amanda Yee and #3 Audrey Loh played well in their losses.
No. 1 doubles (Kasey McCoy/Violet Salvo) and #2 doubles (Riley McCoy/Stella Chen) won one set a piece against Keppel’s subs, winning 6-1 and 7-5 respectively.
They each came close in another set, each losing 6-4. Once again, MHS couldn’t field a #3 doubles team and forfeited 3 sets.
Up next: The Lady Minutemen (1-1) will travel to Monrovia HS (Div. 4) on 9/9/21 and will seek to keep moving on their upward trajectory.
