Football:

Rio Hondo Prep has a habit of doing things quickly.

The Kares needed just four hours on Wednesday to find a replacement game after Linfield Christian canceled their contest that was slated for Friday night.

RHP went to Tujunga on Thursday evening, and put the game away with 28 first-quarter points.

Rio Hondo Prep improved to 2-0 after its 44-12 victory at Verdugo Hills High School.

The second half was played with a running clock, and the Dons scored one rushing TD in the third and fourth quarters.

Gio Ortega had a lot to do with the game getting out of hand early.

Ortega caught a 19-yard scoring pass from Damyan Diaz and then extended the RHP lead to 14-0 when Armando Carbajal connected with Ortega on a 17-yard TD.

Still in the first quarter, Ortega picked off Verdugo Hills quarterback Dane Iversen and brought it back 35 yards for the pick-six.

Calvin Johnson had a 40-yard TD run and Jonathan Guerrero scored on a 60-yard sprint for the Kares.

Ryan McCulloch had a four-yard TD run and RHP’s final two points of the night came on a safety.

Rio Hondo Prep had a 252-128 advantage in total offense.

Guerrero led the RHP rushing attack with 80 yards on four carries.

Defensively, Joshua Taflinger (5.5 tackles), Nathan Curtis (4.5) Aaron Saiz (3.5), Ryan McCulloch (2.5) and Ray Montez (2.5) led the way.

Up next: Rio Hondo Prep will host Boron next Friday.

Quotable:

RHP coach, Mark Carson: “It was a great atmosphere at Verdugo Hills and we’re thankful they reached out to us and hosted the game on such short notice. Their AD told us it was their largest crowd in years. And we of course appreciate our fans for making the trip as well. We jumped on them early, not sure they were ready for our team speed. They had a noticeable size advantage, but I’m afraid we were too quick off the ball on offense, and too quick to the ball on defense.”
