Softball:

Apparently there’s a reason Upland is 22-2.

Through the first five innings of play on Saturday at Glendora High School, the Highlanders’ bats were pretty quiet and trailed 2-1.

Upland, though, erupted for seven runs in the top of the sixth inning and went on to defeat the Tartans, 8-2, in the second round of the CIF-SS Division 2 playoffs.

The big blow was a grand slam by Marissa Caballero.

Maddy Souza went 3-for-3, including a walk, double, and run scored.

Glendora struck for two runs in the bottom of the first and Upland didn’t waste any time bringing Sarah Haendiges into the game.

Haendiges took over with a two-run deficit and no outs, and she shut the GHS offense down the rest of the way.

Haendiges allowed just three hits, walked one and struck out six Tartans’ batters.

Haley Ganino doubled and scored in the first inning.

Morgan Coleman walked and scored.

Ashley Hibbard had three of Glendora’s five hits and she drove in a run.

Up next: Upland will meet up with San Dimas in the quarterfinal round.

The Saints (11-10) edged Warren, 3-2, on Saturday.
