Baseball:

South Hills baseball coach Darren Murphy has a stellar resume.

As of Tuesday evening, Murphy now has 400 career victories and two CIF-SS championships.

At Northview, his alma mater, Murphy won 256 games, including a CIF-SS championship in 2008.

The Vikings defeated Diamond Ranch, 1-0, to claim his first championship at Dodger Stadium.

Eight years later, Murphy led South Hills to a 4-3 victory over Redlands East Valley, 4-3, at San Manual Stadium in San Bernardino.

Fast forward five years, and South Hills defeated Diamond Ranch, 8-2, for win number 400.

It’s Murphy’s 144th win at the West Covina school.

And it allowed the Huskies to jump into a three-way tie for first place with Los Altos and Diamond Bar.

Sterling Patick went six scoreless innings, allowing just two hits, walking one and striking out five.

Patick needed just 62 pitches to get through six innings.

Jeremiah Sibrian singled, was hit-by-pitch twice, walked, scored and drove in two runs for the Huskies.

Quotable:

South Hills baseball coach/athletic director, Darren Murphy: “Northview was a lifelong journey. I went to games there as a kid, my two brothers played baseball there and my sister was an athlete there. I graduated in 1990. It was second nature to go to Northview and to coach there meant so much. It was real personal. I wanted to see Northview win. To get to win No. 400, it takes a lot of people to get there. All of the coaches, players and parents have been so instrumental in my success and I appreciate all of them.  I have a lot of ideas that I think  work, but they can’t be used if the players and their parents don’t buy in. The one thing that hit me today was that if not for COVID-19 and the shortened 2020 season, my dad would have been alive to see this, because it would have happened last baseball season. But I’m very grateful that all of the hard work of everyone around me has led to such a successful run. It’s not just about the wins and losses, it’s also about the process and the journey and preparing our guys for baseball and life. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing a kid take what you and your staff taught him and they use it to be successful in their career and life.”

Up next: South Hills will travel to Diamond Bar on Thursday afternoon to finish out their two-game series with the Brahmas.
