Football:

Last year, and at first glance, La Salle freshman Richie Munoz looked more like a linebacker than a quarterback.

The same guy who didn’t look the part, though, threw for 30 touchdown passes and led the Lancers to a 6-5 season,

What made that special was the fact that one year prior, La Salle had gone 0-10.

Perhaps the most impressive part of that freshman year was watching Munoz earn the universal respect of his coaches and teammates, especially the playmakers.

Fast forward to March and now April of 2021, and Munoz worked his butt off during the offseason to get his body in shape, and he’s terrorizing defense’s with his right arm and two legs.

On Saturday, Munoz completed 16 of his 26 pass attempts for 339 yards.

Munoz threw for six touchdowns and rushed for 78 yards in La Salle’s 47-29 victory at Salesian.

Marcus Powe continues to be a beast.

Powe caught four TD passes and finished with 157 yards receiving.

Dave Mysza and Gio Butteri also caught scoring strikes from Munoz.

And Matthew Gamble led the Lancers defense with 14 tackles and two sacks.

Up next: La Salle will host Harvard-Westlake on Friday.

Kickoff is set for 7.

Quotable:

La Salle coach, Ben Buys: “We executed better and played with a great amount of passion. Richie was spot-on, even three of the incompletions he had were pass interference. The work he put in during the offseason allows him to run and throw the ball. He worked really hard to tone up. I think the fact that he can run the ball and has another year in the offense, has him playing a lot better than even his freshman season. The way our guys played together made me proud. They enjoyed the game together. The kids love each other and they’re going to play for each other.”

La Salle quarterback, Richie Munoz: “It feels amazing. We didn’t start off the way we wanted to, but we learned from that and now we are doing great. The crazy part is that we haven’t even hit our full potential yet. Once we get there, we are gonna be unstoppable. I’m just so blessed to have a season with my brothers, especially the seniors, because for some of them, it’s their last chance suiting up for a game. We just have to clean up the small mistakes, and once we clean up the small things, we will be even more dangerous.”

Records: La Salle (2-1); Salesian (1-3)
