What a way to start his senior season.

Northview quarterback James Jimenez dominated throughout Thursday’s opener against visiting El Rancho.

Jimenez was 15 of 20 passing for 302 yards and three touchdowns.

All three scores were to the Thompson brothers.

Jimenez also led the Vikings in rushing, with 106 yards and one score on the ground.

Northview took a 16-point lead into the fourth quarter at Covina District Field, and while El Rancho staged an impressive comeback, the Vikings held on for the 31-23 victory.

Deshon Thompson had a 60-yard punt return for a score and caught seven passes for 129 yards and one TD.

Damion Thompson had monster stats as well, tallying eight catches for 188 yards and two scores.

Cheo Medina finished 41 yards rushing for the No. 1 ranked team in Division 7.

El Rancho quarterback Chris Andrade threw for nearly 200 yards, including two TD passes.

Roman Rojas accounted for 150 total yards and one TD.

And Oscar Mendez had north of 100 yards receiving, and caught two TD passes.

Up next: Northview will host San Marino next Friday night at Covina District Field.

The Vikings get a chance to scout their second opponent tonight (Friday), as the Titans travel to Charter Oak to open their season against the Chargers.

Quotable:

El Rancho coach Adrian Medrano: “We played very tough, but we didn’t capitalize in certain situations. I also had a couple of boneheaded coaching moves on my part as well. Overall, we gave the #1 team in a higher division everything they could handle. No moral victories, though, and we can’t rest on our laurels because Bell Gardens will be gunning for us next week.”

Northview coach Marcel Perez: “We came out pretty strong for our first game. We graduated a lot of players, so we needed our experienced guys to step up and they did. The younger guys are just learning how to play varsity football.

El Rancho gave us a good fight. It’s always great to open the season with a victory. James Jimenez was huge tonight and he did all that behind four new offensive lineman. We have many things that need fixing, so we have a lot of work ahead of us.”
