Arcadia Wins First Pacific League Championship Since 2011; Apaches Ride Arms of Preston Howey, Dustin Allen in 6-4 Victory at CV

Aug 19 2019 08:26:22

How sweet it must feel for the Arcadia baseball program.

They waited eight long years to be able to call themselves champions of the Pacific League.

And they dethroned Crescenta Valley on the Falcons home field in the process.

Arcadia used a combo of Preston Howey and Dustin Allen on the mound and CV was able to muster just one earned run.

The Apaches left Stengel Field with a 6-4 victory.

Howey is now 12-0 and Allen picked up another save.

Howey went 4 2/3 innings in the biggest game of his prep career.

While the undefeated junior saw four runs cross the plate, only one was earned.

CV collected six hits and three walks against Howey.

Howey struck out five Falcons’ batters.

Dustin Allen has been very effective closing out games, and Tuesday was no different.

Allen got the save, going 2 1/3 innings and without allowing a run.

CV got one hit off Allen, he walked one and struck out one.

David Melendez had CV’s lone RBI on Tuesday night.

Will Grimm went 2 for 4, with a double.

Chase Smith and Noah Maddox both singled and scored for the Falcons.

Will Grimm got the loss for CV.

Grimm went five innings, allowing six runs (four earned) on seven hits.

He walked two and struck out four Arcadia batters.

Chad Ruf provided two scoreless innings of relief for the Falcons.

Arcadia put five fourth-inning runs up on the board and it turned out to be enough.

Dustin Allen also did his damage at the plate.

He went 2 for 3, with a single, double and two RBIs.

Chris Wilson, who will get the start on the mound in Friday’s game, went 2 for 4, with an RBI and run scored.

Mikey Easter had a pair of base hits and Brandon Nguyen singled, scored twice and had an RBI.

Jacob Lopez and Tyler Quintero both singled and scored for the Apaches.

Jeffrey Castillo didn’t have a base hit, but the star senior scored once and has played as big a role as anyone in the 2019 championship.

While everyone in Arcadia colors is excited, they have all acknowledged that there is still one more regular season game to go, and that the biggest prize and goal still lies ahead, being what they hope is a CIF-SS Division 2 championship.

Up next: The Apaches host CV on Friday night at 7 in the regular season finale.

Quotable:

Arcadia coach Nick Lemas: “It’s been too long and feels great. I am so happy for our seniors. After not winning it last year with such a great team, it makes this even more special. So proud of all our coaches and players. A lot of work went into the feelings we are experiencing right now. But it’s not over. The main prize still lies ahead.”

Arcadia senior Jeffrey Castillo: “Since I’ve started on varsity as a freshman along with Jacob Lopez, CV has always taken away the league from us. Winning this year was amazing because we finally took it back on our wall. It is very special, because every single player on this team contributed to this. I am so lucky to play with such a talented group of guys. We couldn’t have done this without everyone in an Arcadia uniform.”

Arcadia senior Jacob Lopez: “This means everything to the coaches and players in this program. It’s like the sweat and blood we put into this year all paid off, but we aren’t quite done yet. For the seniors, it means everything. We have left a permanent mark that we can see forever.”

Arcadia junior Dustin Allen: “It is an awesome feeling knowing we brought back the Pacific League championship to Arcadia High School after eight years. I was glad I was able to back my teammates and contribute as they’ve done all season. Whenever I struggled, they always supported me and had my back. To share this feeling with all these guys means so much, because every single player and coach on this team gave everything they had to make this night possible.”
