Football:
Things looked good early on for Citrus as they visited Chaffey in their 2026 season opener.
The Owls led 10-0 and 17-7 midway through the second quarter.
However, the Panthers scored 26 consecutive points and cruised to a 40-23 victory in Rancho Cucamonga.
Frankie Villabazo was in beast mode in the first game of his sophomore season.
Villabazo completed 14-of-22 for 221 yards, four TDs and no turnovers.
He also led all rushers with 64 yards on seven carries, including a 6-yard TD run with four seconds remaining in the half to give Chaffey a 26-17 lead.
Nathan Enriquez caught four passes for 100 yards, including a 30-yard scoring strike with 1:35 to play.
Justin Benson (2-for-46), Julian Lofton-Lundy (2-for-40) and Jay Frazier (2-for-18) combined for six catches for 104 yards and one TD reception apiece.
Evan Ramos and Abraham Harris had eight tackles apiece to pace the Chaffey defense.
Citrus had a 28-17 advantage in first downs, a 247-221 edge in passing and they tallied 360 yards of total offense as compared to 358 for the Panthers.
Connor Underhill completed 22-of-36 for 195 yards.
He hooked up with Dylan Tapley (10 yards), Cameron Bateman (10) and Tapley again (1) on scoring strikes.
Underhill also led the Owls with 40 yards rushing on seven carries.
Bateman reeled in a game-high seven passes for 62 yards and the score.
Tapley caught five passes for 45 yards and two TDs.
Isaiah McKee totaled six receptions for 57 yards.
Elijah Ybanez led Citrus with seven tackles, including two for-loss.
Dylan Howard finished with six tackles.
Former Glendora linebacker Aidan Yamazaki was third with five tackles in his college debut.
Up next: Citrus and Chaffey will both be in action next Saturday.
The Owls host Saddleback and the Panthers travel to Santa Ana.
